your bookstore for detailed literature about the History of Mallorca.

5000-4000 BC
The oldest evidences of a settling were found in a cave called Son Muleta near the town Soller. Here some human and animal bones were found which scientists and researchers dated from the time approximately 4000 years Before Christ. Food-gatherers and fishermen arrive from eastern Spain, settling in strategically-situated caves and constructing large cave complexes.

Also in the near of the town Valdemossa some rests of ceramics were found from the times approx. 3.800 BC.

Other evidences, like tools, ceramics, jewellery, wapons and partly rests of buildings from the early era of Mallorca are in a surpising good condition and are exhibited in some museums in Mallorca. Most of these findings were estimated to the time between 1500 BC until approx. 120 BC (occupation by the Romans). Written documents from these times unfortunately do nearly not exist.

2000 –1400 BC
From the times 2000 BC through 1400 BC some rests of houses were found. These basic building structures can partly be found today in Mallorca.
Near Valldemossa some rests of stone-houses were found, estimated from the time around 1870 BC.
The race known as the "Beaker-People" arrives on the island. They build stone houses, develop pottery technology and work metals not indigenous to the Balearics. Evidence of foreign trade and communication.

1400 BC
From this time originate the today famous - and very typical for Mallorca - round towers (socalled Talayots) with a diameter of approx. 10 meters up to 15 meters and an estimated height of up to 10 meters.
These towers were partly habitable, but they also were used as graves, cult- and burial places. Some of these towers can be viewed - partly restored - still today. For example in the area of Arta, C'an Picafort or near Santanyi.
Height of the Talayotic culture on Mallorca. Warring tribes engage in primitive trade around the eastern Mediterranean.
Talayot

1000 BC
The today known rectangular type of construction is probably brought by the Carthagians on their wars of conquest to Mallorca and originates from the time approximately around 1000 BC. A greek originate - i.e. the typical greek patterns - can't be overseen in many things from these times, for example ceramics, jewellery or wapons.
