1808 / 09
1808: Palma put up a fierce resistance against the yoke of Napoleon. 1809:The inhabitans of Palma attack the jewish ghetto, thinking that the Judes support the troops of Napoleon with their money.

1837
Establishment of the first regular steamship Service between Mallorca and the mainland.  

1838 / 39
The famous polish composer 'Frederic Chopin' and the french writer 'George Sand' stayed in the winter 1838/39 in the near of Valldemossa.
(Today an interesting museum of Chopin in Valldemossa can be visited. Really worth to see (photo).)

- The austrian duke Ludwig Salvator lived from 1860 - 1913 in Mallorca.

- A big fire destroyed 1894 the townhall (Ajuntamento) in Palma.

1873-1875
The demolition of the protection walls around Palma began. 1875: Establishment of Mallorcas first train between Palma and Inca.

1879-1898
1879-1898: Period of social and commercial success for the Islands, thanks largely to a booming trade in wine and almonds.
This comes to an abrupt end with the arrival of the phylloxera virus, which destroys the wine industry (see also Wine history). Economic decline results in widespread emigration to the mainland and to the United States.

1883: Isabella II. becomes Queen.
The ceremonies and celebrations in Palma take three days.
